It never ceases to amaze me just how Latigo - the place where I was born and raised - affects those who are freshly awed by the beauty, hospitality, and warmth of my home. This was borne in upon me last week when I took a trio of siblings out on their very first cross-country skiing expedition.

The two younger girls ended up on their backsides on several occasions, but they couldn’t seem to stop smiling about it. When we had made it down our ‘chute’ trail and pulled out to a bend which offered a spectacular view of the range some sixty miles distant, I had the panting skiers stop to just admire it. It’s an old ski-guide trick, ski until you’re out of breath, stop and admire the view, and then no one suspects you might be a little more out-of-shape than advertised.

When I explained the theory of catch-your-breath-at-the-breathtaking-scenery, the youngest of my skiing students piped up and said, “Well, it’s just so beautiful, I don’t think we have enough time to do it justice.”

Wisdom comes from the mouths of youths at times, no?

And, I have to tell you, she had a point. The mountains cut into the sky like they were angry at the empyrean blue dome above us, and the sun warmed us through until we were all unzipping our coats and loosening our scarves. The snow was good, the view was unparalleled, and the company was in good humor.

It was a glorious day, but it was an even better ski. We trekked up a few hills just to practice keeping balance while going down. They went from shuffling along, uncertain what to do with their poles, to confidently gliding through the aspens. The journey was just a little long, and I ended up pulling the youngest for a little while, but everyone still had big grins by the time we pulled up to the lodge.

You can see for yourself, she had a great time… either that or she was thinking about the cup of hot chocolate waiting for her when she got the skiis off her feet.

Latigo is my home, and my family’s home, and we open it up to anyone who wants to come and visit. We take pride in sharing this peculiar little mountain-top ranch with others, showing them just how gourmet the cooking really is, how grand the snow is on which to ski, and how hospitable our hearts are. We want you to feel as welcome as if you were stepping through the door to your own home, but the food, accommodations, and service are of a standard rarely seen at such manageable prices. It’s because we aren’t here to gouge your wallet, we’re here to welcome you to the mountains and share with you exactly why we chose to call it ‘home’. Winter or summer, Latigo is waiting for you.
