Dude Ranch Kids Programs | Children's Horseback Riding | Dude Ranch Kids Campout

Just for Kids

“I’m bored” is a phrase you won’t hear

Structured activities throughout the day keep youngsters occupied and entertained. While parents are on their trail rides, children are supervised in fun and educational activities. Our intent at Latigo Ranch is to give you flexibility and freedom. For some activities, parents want to be with their children; at other times they would like to be able to do things separately. The children's program is not mandatory. A family can do everything together, but we have found that most children prefer to be with their peers and counselor whenever possible.

Kids' Ute Scouts Campout

Children in this age group will spend a great deal of time riding. We emphasize instruction, and we structure fun riding activities with sufficient challenge to ensure that these young riders are improving their riding skills while having a good time. We encourage children to participate in all of the week's activities - trail rides, square-dancing, nature walks, swimming, fishing, hayrides, and more. They may eat meals with their family, or they may eat at a separate table with their peers and counselors.

Riding a horse demands concentration. Children six to seven years old have more limited attention spans than older kids and need special attention as they learn to ride. Their rides are often a bit shorter catering to their abilities and interests. To deal with the special needs of this age group, the counselors ride with them separately from the older kids. 6 to 7 year olds will ride as frequently as the older ones but on rides of slightly shorter duration. In addition to the activities that the older children engage in, these children will spend more time with their counselors in other activities like swimming, fishing, hiking, and educational games.

They have a great time. They play with any other kids their age who might be here. They have the chance to go swimming in our heated pool. They explore and discover. We find that the combination of ranch and mountains stimulates inquiring young minds. We  want to help youngsters seize the opportunity to learn about this unique environment. Children under six years of age are supervised during those hours that the adults are riding. While here they will learn about mountain animals, plants, and rocks. They will hear stories about Indians and horses. They will create crafts in the Sheriff's Office and the tipi, go on nature walks with their counselor, be led around on the kid's special horse. They also might find the activities result in some afternoon napping, too.

Please talk with us in advance to arrange baby-sitting services for infants. The charge for babysitting is $25.00 per hour. Cribs are available for infants.

If you wish to bring a nanny or au pair, please contact us to discuss special rates for them.

Kids' Ute Scouts Cookout

We offer a fun Wednesday dinner alternative. The Ute were the indigenous  people who lived in this area before the arrival of the settlers.

Children who are riding in the regular horse program may ride on the Ute Scouts Dinner Cookout. It is geared for kids 6 to 10 years of age, but younger children may hike the short distance into the site with one or more of their parents following a short drive. The permanent tipi campsite is located on Latigo property within a quarter of a mile of a ranch road. Any parent who wants to be a part of this may ride along, or parents who don’t want to make the ride, may rendezvous with their children later in the day by hiking in.

After a normal morning ride or activities, Ute Scouts will leave shortly following lunch Thursday and arrive at the campsite mid-afternoon. Then all will play games and learn some cowboy skills. Kids like hot dogs and soda. That’s what they’ll get! The campsite is close enough that  the Ute Scouts will get back to Latigo in time for the Western Dance that evening.
