At Latigo, we offer our guests a myriad of choices every Tuesday afternoon for how they would like to spend their Wednesday; regular rides, an all-day ride with packed lunches (and back in time for dinner and our cowgirl-singer), or our high meadows pack trip—where they spend the night out in the mountains.
Randy guides the riders up into the mountains, farther than any of the ordinary rides, and, with only a short break for eating the packed lunches, finds a place for the group to camp. There is an art to finding the perfect campsite; it has to have water and enough grass for the horses to eat the night away in their little temporary electric fence, be near a level area for pitching tents, and enough trees to provide shelter against the elements.
Our mountains have given us 30 years of amazing living—and we can keep returning to our favorite high-meadows haunts year after year because we’ve treated the mountains as well as they have treated us.
We ride rough hills and find hidden ways through the forest. We pack in everything you need to eat and sleep in the wild for a night. We pick a different place to camp every week. We leave nature as undisturbed as possible.
We want each of our high meadows riders to head home from the campsite unable to point to any signs that humans had ever been there.
A vacation at a dude ranch is a commitment to adventure and getting-away-ness. The high meadows pack trip is when you want to take it to the next level. It is getting back to the roots of nature in the depths of the Rockies.
