Five Unconventional Stars

In the world of incorporated hospitality, a five-star label connotes granite countertops, curbside greeting, timed refills, and access to Michelin starred restaurants. We, here, at Latigo don’t, have corporate stars. Every review on, our Google business listing, or our Facebook page is how we rate ourselves, and it doesn’t take browsing very many of them to come to the conclusion that Latigo fills out the full five.

Do we have curbside pickup within 60 seconds of arrival? Well, we don’t have a curb… so, no. You will, however, be met at the front gate with a horse-drawn covered wagon. You will be shown a tour of the ranch while your car is brought to your cabin and your luggage is unloaded.

Is there access to a Michelin starred restaurant? Every meal is served out of the Latigo kitchen. We tailor our food to the schedule, to a gloriously diverse meal plan, to local ingredients, and to you, the most important part of the equation. We’re told our food is world-class, and we are inclined to agree.

And how about the rest? Timed drink refills, granite counter tops, highly-rated spa access, state of the art gyms, top-of-the-line beds and bedding, impeccable cleanliness, and an ‘inviting lounge area’, and the minimum of two premium quality snacks presented during lounge service?

The thing about incorporated hospitality and the star system that goes along with it is that it is designed to offer nice things to hoards of people as they spin through an impersonal lobby to a room with fancy amenities, and jet off to the next thing. At Latigo, it is all about one thing: you.

We and our staff all know your names, wish you good morning, and offer you a refill… not to keep a star-rating, but to make sure you’re getting the most out of your vacation. While here, you might not have access to a state-of-the-art gym or spa, but we guarantee the activities will leave your muscles craving a soak in our hot tub. Our beds are all comfortable, our sheets are warm, and you’ll sleep great up here, away from the noise after a long day in the mountains and a belly full of the best food possible. Each cabin is well-appointed and cozy, and by the end of the week, it will feel like home. The closest you’ll get to a proper lounge area is sitting around the fire on the front lawn in the evening, the late sun still kissing the mountain view over fifty miles to the horizon, and that’s better than any hotel lounge I can think of.

The rating system doesn’t fit places like Latigo. It’s arbitrary and confining, made for the big establishments that herd people in and out of a lobby. We never asked for a rating from the suit-types because we know that every five-star review from our guests says so much more. That’s the difference between an incorporated “five stars” and our brand of service.
