Latigo According to Grace

March 30, 2020

For those who are hoping to work at Latigo in the future, or who are already hired on for this summer, here's what our intrepid Grace Norman had to give as advice before she returns for her second summer wrangling in the barn:

"My experience working at Latigo Ranch has been outstanding, both as a guest in previous years and as a wrangler last summer. Getting to be a cowboy every day is so much fun and truly changes you. You'll get to build a snowman if we are lucky enough to get snow, ride in some of the most gorgeous country in Colorado, create an unbreakable bond with your fellow summer staff, go to rodeos on some weekends, meet some amazing people from around the world, and eat some of the best food in the universe (and no, I am not exaggerating about the food).

All of these are just something of the things that you'll get to experience over the summer, regardless of if you choose to be a wrangler or waitstaff.

As a wrangler, I can give you some insight into what I experienced daily or weekly. This job is very physically demanding. You will, of course, get the most time around the horses and they will slowly become your life. You will learn all 60+ horse's names and their personalities. Soon, you'll find your favorite horses [...]. You won't be able to resist saying “hello” to them every time you see them. Whenever Hannah assigns you to one of these, you know that it will be a good week no matter what. Hannah will also give mercy for those days where you can't stand to take an all-day, or maybe get bad news from home. You'll lead trails for usually more than 4 hours a day and will work that much in the barn as well. You'll get to know all of our trail loops and it will take a while to get them down. [...] Us returners will help you 24/7 to learn these things, and you won't be the only one learning new things.

There will be days where getting up at 5 am on a Saturday is the worst and you will have a bad attitude and will be grouchy until you get breakfast at 7:15. There will be times where you might want to cry because you have to take an all-day ride[...]. There will be people that you can't stand or horses that frustrate to no end. There are days where it is so hard to get up out of your bunk but it is always worth it.

I didn't expect how hard it would be sometimes to fence or wrangle. A few groups of horses like to hide in the hay meadows so you have to go dig them out of where ever they decided to hide. But regardless, wrangling the horses in and out is the best. I wish I could explain the feeling of how it goes, but I can't. (See the picture above)

Regardless of which job you choose, you will love it. You will get to ride, get close to both staff and guests, and have the time of your life. Both jobs are hard but very rewarding. I am not an expert on the kitchen and waitstaff, as I mainly know what I've seen they do and what last year's waitstaff would share with me. So of course, I felt that I should more describe my position."

With that attitude coming from behind the scenes, why wouldn't you want to come to Latigo - either to work or to vacation? The people who own Latigo think it's the best place on earth. The people who work at Latigo think it's the best place on earth. And the people who come as guests... well... so do they.

What are you waiting for? Latigo is waiting for you!

‘Thank you’ just seems so inadequate…It was honestly one of the best vacations I can remember.
